Embracing Community - St. Andrew's McKinney From August 2005 to February 2006, the Michie’s were graciously hosted and nurtured by the people of St. Philip’s, Frisco, and their Rector, The Rev. Clay Lein. During that time, plans for the church were formulated, the name “St. Andrew’s” was approved by Bishop Stanton, and we collected our first “launch team” members. In February 2006, St. Andrew’s held its first worship services in the home of Mackie and Susie Shiflett in McKinney. The church soon moved to the aerobics studio of the McKinney Family YMCA, and when it outgrew that, to the gymnasium. Taking most of 2006 to plan and grow, St. Andrew’s had it public “launch” on November 5, 2006.In the spring of 2007, St. Andrew’s moved to its current worship location at Wolford Elementary School in McKinney. From its twelve members in February 2006 to now, the church has grown to well over 200 members. Thanks to the vision of the Diocese of Dallas, St. Andrew’s has over 11 acres of property on McKinney Ranch Road, just west of Ridge Road, and has a Master Plan for this property. The church plans to build its “Phase One” building when it has over 300 members attending. Even more exciting than its growth and building plans is St. Andrew’s wonderful service to the McKinney community in its brief history. St. Andrew’s has put on the Believe! 10K, 5K and one-mile run through historic downtown McKinney in both 2006 and 2007. The race benefits Holy Family School’s scholarship fund, and has already made a big impact in the community. Church members can often be seen at community festivals, offering free portraits to people passing by. St. Andrew’s also has started the first Besom charity in North America, designed to help people give time, money and things to those in need. Already, the Besom has provided appliances, furniture, clothing and food to families referred to it by Head Start, the McKinney ISD, the Collin County Committee on Aging, Adult Protective Services, Hope’s Door, and more. |
